OUR DEMO GROUP
Suburban's Demo Group is looking for new members
SDTC's Demo Group visits various retirement, assisted living and nursing facilities as well as the occasional preschool and elementary school. Demos are generally not more than once a month and not even every month, although with more participants, the visits could be more frequent. Facilities we've visited love us and have asked for us to come back. With more Demo Team members, we could make more people happy. Demo Team members are not required to participate in every demo, although they can if they want to. You participate at your convenience.
What goes on at a demo?
The facility will have the residents gathered in a large (or sometimes not so large) room like an auditorium or recreation room and when the Demo Group arrives, we will first circulate around the room with our dogs, allowing the residents to pet the dogs and ask whatever questions they might have.
Then, one of our Demo Group will "emcee" and explain to the audience who we are and what we do. Each of the Group members will introduce themselves and their dog in as many or as few words as they are comfortable with.
The Group then goes on to demonstrate the types of exercises we train for, according to skill level. Those at the beginner level might do some heeling, or a stay, and those more advanced demonstrate retrieves, jumping, scentwork, etc. When it's children that we're visiting, we put a little less emphasis on what our dogs are trained to do and more emphasis on children's safety in relation to dogs, i.e. how a child should approach a dog.
After the demo, Group members will again circulate among the residents for more dog-petting and questions.
The demos are usually not much longer than an hour or so and the facilities are within a fairly close distance to the school, half an hour driving at the most, usually less.

Who could do it?
Members who think they might like to be part of the Demo Group should have passed the CGC test. Therapy Dog certification is preferable but not required. Your dog should be comfortable around other dogs, in new environments, receiving attention from lots of strangers and be under control of their owner.
OK, you talked me into it. Who should I contact?
